The Mico University College CARE Centre was established in 1980 as a Centre of Excellence, dedicated to child assessment and research in education. It was formed through a partnership between the Netherlands Government and the Government of Jamaica.
Empowering Every Learner:
The Mico CARE Centre supports diverse learners through services such as diagnosing learning challenges, guiding gifted students, and providing remedial interventions. It also conducts special education research, trains teachers, facilitates clinical practice for tertiary students, and develops culturally relevant assessment tools for the Caribbean.
Mico CARE has partnered with Skilled Connections, a not for profit organization based in the USA, to provide speech and occupational screening and therapy to clients up to eight years old, both face to face and virtually. This partnership has provided services to over 30 families since 2023. The partnership has also included training for 30 paraprofessionals, providing them with skills to support the development of language skills and functional skills in young children with developmental delays.

Mico CARE is pleased to partner with the Smile A While Foundation, a registered non-profit organization, founded by Dr Joanne Oates-Toussaint, an American occupational therapist of Jamaican descent. Smile-A-While Foundation provides Caribbean children with free access to paediatric therapists including speech, physical and occupational therapy.
Together we have launched Echo Autism Jamaica-Educators, the first Echo Autism initiative in Jamaica. Extensions of Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) is an international programme that uses video-conferences to provide access to best-practices for professionals in underserved areas, who would have not otherwise had access to these services.

Our partnership with CASE has been very effective in providing targeted support for parents of children with autism through virtual parent coaching sessions. To date, over 800 Jamaican families have benefited from these sessions. Additionally, over 100 teachers have received training in strategies for accommodating students with autism in the classroom.

In March 2023 The Mico University College and Eastern Illinois University (EIU) in the United States, signed a memorandum of understanding signalling their commitment to collaborative activities between both institutions. Among the initial partnerships was the speech therapy project. This project is a unique initiative which involves graduate students in the speech therapy programme at EIU providing weekly speech therapy sessions, through video conferencing, to clients at Mico CARE Centre under the supervision of EIU faculty.
In 2024 the partnership extended to a study abroad programme, where EIU students spend a week at Mico CARE Centre, St Ann, providing in-person therapy to clients, while their professors conduct speech evaluations and guide treatment plans. This project has allowed more clients access to speech therapy and has also provided rich cultural immersion for EIU students while honing their skills in teletherapy.
At Mico CARE Centre, we provide quality psycho-educational and related assessment, therapeutic and academic intervention, resources and training to support students with learning challenges.
